Food insecurity is defined by the USDA as "a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food." These food insecurity estimates are based on answers to food insecurity questions in the Core Food Security Module, unemployment rate, poverty rate, median income (with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, National School Lunch Program, income eligibility, etc as thresholds), % Hispanic, % African American, homeownership, and other variables, using the USDA food insecurity measure.
